Water Treatment Works

As part of the major upgrade works along the river Thames, CovElec undertook the complete mechanical upgrade to various sites owned by Affinity Water.

These drinking water extract works incorporated the upgrade to fish screens providing higher throughput with greater pumping capability into the supply network.

CovElec initially sized 4off ABB motors from pump performance curves. The optimum power requirements were noted to be 273kw @187lts/sec with a peak of 313kw @207lts/sec. The motors selected were 355kw ABB IE3 energy efficient process performance providing >10% spare power output.

CovElec’s scope of supply widened out to include the installation and commissioning of the motors and higher output pumps.

CovElec undertook the design and manufacture of the pump plinths, frames and mounting supports. The design has to take into account the hydraulic effects of multiple pumps delivering water into the discharge manifold on peak demand.

The old motors and pumps were removed and set aside. New reinforced concrete plinths put in place, newly fabricated pump frames, greater throughput pumps, new ABB motors, new pipework and instrumentation installed and commissioned.

CovElec engineers undertook laser alignment in the vertical axis on the flange faces to ensure the installation was concentric.

Finally a vibration and 3D space plot were carried out to check the installation was within the operating window and trim balance undertaken where necessary.

CovElec are currently back on site after the site owners requested the pumps be overrun at 55hz to ensure there are no harmonic or resonance issues.
